On June 28, 2026, at 7:20 a.m., an electric Tesla semi truck collided with two vehicles in Dayton, Nevada, resulting in the deaths of two people.

The collision occurred at the intersection of U.S. 50 and Traditions Parkway when the driver of the Tesla truck reportedly fell asleep behind the wheel before crashing into a Volkswagen Beetle, killing both occupants, who have been identified as Sergio and Jennifer Villaneuva.

Another vehicle was also struck, resulting in a person being emergency air-lifted to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Tesla truck sustained no injuries, and it's unclear if they will face criminal charges.

Both the Nevada Highway Patrol and Lyon County Sheriff's Office responded to the crash, which is under ongoing investigation by the Nevada State Police Highway Patrol. An official report on the crash can be found on the Lyon County Sheriff's Office Facebook page.

The family of Sergio Villanueva III has set up a GoFundMe to support Villanueva's son, Sergio Villanueva IV, who was in college in Ohio at the time of the crash.

Thoughts on This Crash as a Nevada Car Accident Attorney

This incident is an extremely tragic event and cut short the lives of two people. With this crash involving two deaths and one person with severe injuries, there will most likely be two wrongful death claims and a personal injury claim at play.

While liability is already pretty clear-cut, with the driver of the Tesla truck reported to have fallen asleep, a clear sign of negligence and lack of duty of care, the question is who these claims will be directed towards, as under Nevada vicarious liability laws, employers can be held liable for the negligent actions of their employees that are committed within the scope of their duty.

So, unless the driver of the Tesla truck owned the vehicle and was not performing work duties, these claims will most likely be targeted toward the company that employed the driver. A $1 million insurance policy is likely available, as commercial vehicles are required to be insured by such under law; however, I can see these cases exceeding $1 million.
