Nevada traffic deaths down nearly 12% from the same period last year.
According to the latest data from the Nevada Department of Transportation, the state recorded 230 traffic fatalities from January through August 2026, down 11.88% from 261 during the same period in 2025. This decline in traffic-related deaths is part of a wider trend that has seen Nevada's traffic fatality rate decrease over the past few years. For 2025, the state recorded 380 fatalities, down from 420 in 2024. Over the past decade, Nevada has averaged 361.3 fatalities per year.
Clark County, which includes Las Vegas, experienced the largest decrease in traffic fatalities, with 127 fatalities recorded, down 24.85% from 169 in 2025. Washoe County saw a 26.19% decrease, with 31 fatalities compared to 42 in the previous year.
However, while the overall trend shows a decline, there were significant increases in traffic fatalities in several rural counties. Nye County saw a 333% increase, from three to 13 fatalities. Lyon County experienced a 300% increase, from six to 16. Elko County and Churchill County also reported substantial increases of 140% and 166.67%, respectively, from seven to 13 and three to eight.
The decrease in fatalities is not uniform across all categories. Vulnerable road users, such as pedestrians and motorcyclists, also experienced changes. There were 63 pedestrian fatalities, a 3.08% decrease from 65 in 2025. Motorcyclist fatalities fell by 13.11%, with 53 compared to 61. However, fatalities involving scooters, mopeds, and ATVs increased by 150%, from two to five. Bicycle fatalities decreased by 54.55%, from 11 to five.
Unrestrained vehicle occupant fatalities saw a 13.04% decrease, from 46 to 40. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department reported 84 traffic fatalities as of Sept. 15, down from 114 by the same date last year.
The leading contributing factors in fatal crashes include pedestrian error and failing to yield the right of way. Additionally, there was a more than 60% increase in hit-and-run cases, linked to recent state law changes. A recent incident involved a 44-year-old man killed outside a marked crosswalk in Las Vegas, with the driver arrested.
Authorities advise drivers to stay vigilant, follow traffic laws, and use caution in high-traffic areas to continue reducing traffic fatalities.
