On Friday, October 9, at 3:20 a.m., a fatal wrong-way crash occurred on Interstate 15 northbound near Las Vegas Motor Speedway, resulting in the deaths of two drivers.

According to the Nevada State Police, a 2014 Hyundai Sonata was traveling southbound in the northbound lane (wrong-way) when it collided head-on with a 2025 Honda Civic, causing the Honda to veer across the northbound lanes. A 2024 Freightliner tractor-trailer struck the Honda, leading it to catch fire.

The crash occurred south of mile marker 55, just outside of the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

The victims of the crash were identified as Keondranique Dyshae Young from Las Vegas, a 30-year-old driver of the Hyundai Sonata, and Nichole Marie Klunker from Arizona, a 37-year-old driver of the Honda Civic, both of whom died at the scene. The driver of the Freightliner was uninjured and has been cooperating with investigators.

The family of Nichole Klunker has set up a GoFundMe.

The Nevada State Police Highway Patrol Southern Command has investigated a total of 53 fatal crashes, resulting in 59 traffic fatalities in 2026 so far.

Perspective on the Recent Wrong-Way Crash on Interstate 15 from an Attorney

The I-15 is notorious for damaging and fatal accidents, but this one involving two deaths and a vehicle fire really put into perspective how dangerous the I-15 can be.

From a legal view, I'm guessing a wrongful death claim will be filed for potential losses that can include loss of companionship, loss of support, and funeral costs. Even though the fatal crash involved someone from outside of Nevada, the wrongful death claim is going to be handled in Nevada court, most likely the Eighth Judicial District Court, to be exact. A claim for property damage to the Freightliner may also be filed.

Based on the limited information, I don't see any claims being filed against any government agencies for inadequate signage or other reasons.

Stepping away from the legal view, this accident also put into perspective that our streets may require additional protections from wrong-way driving, which could include motion-detection flashing lights or one-sided spike-like objects.
