On July 1, 2025, in Las Vegas, a severe dust storm came through East Tropicana Avenue, causing 70 wooden utility poles to collapse in a domino-like fashion. The incident occurred between South Eastern Avenue and South Sandhill Road, trapping a Clark County woman, Kirstin Rachelle Parker, in her car for seven hours.

Parker was attempting to drive through the stormy conditions on East Tropicana Avenue when she encountered the falling utility poles. She tried to increase her speed to avoid the poles but could not clear the path. One of the utility poles, along with attached power cables, fell directly onto her vehicle, surrounding her with live power cables.

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department officers arrived on the scene and assisted with traffic control and emergency services, but Parker remained trapped.

The woman was eventually freed after a lengthy seven-hour ordeal. According to the lawsuit filed by Parker in Clark County District Court, NV Energy and its agents, employees, contractors, and technicians are named as responsible for the utility poles' design, installation, inspection, maintenance, and repair.

The lawsuit alleges a breach of duty to maintain utility poles safely.

Parker is seeking damages, including medical and other treatments, which have exceeded $15,000. Additionally, she has had to limit her occupational and recreational activities, resulting in a loss of earning capacity, lost wages, physical impairment, mental anguish, and a diminished enjoyment of life.

Property damage to her vehicle is also included in the claims.

At the time of the incident, NV Energy had not yet responded to the lawsuit, and no hearing had been scheduled to address the case.

Opinion from a Personal Injury Attorney on This Utility Domino

Even though the incident happened over a year ago, based on Nevada's statute of limitations under NRS 11.190 for personal injury claims, this is being filed within the given two-year time frame.

However, the time from the incident to filing a claim could affect the claim's strength of evidence, and insurance companies/opposing counsel could use the delayed filing as an argument.

Also, I can see the claim being somewhat complex, as it's going to require experts from the engineering and electrical fields and maybe more, and having worked with experts before in personal injury claims, they are, one, not cheap, and two, don't always give the results you want. On top of that, Nevada Energy is a major company, so this claim is most likely going to be faced with a team of skilled defense attorneys with deep resources.

But this claim sounds valid, and I could see some sort of settlement being reached.
